B is for the Broken Dishes block

OK, on my way with this monthly blogging challenge!

Today's quilt block is called envelope, or more commonly, broken dishes.

You need 8 triangles, of a focus fabric and a background (must read as background) fabric.  They are pretty simple to sew up - just watch the placement of the triangles.  One way of setting the blocks together is shown below (image from wikimedia commons):

I would love to quilt but don't have the patience...or room, to work on one. I've seen this block before but didn't know what it was called.

I've worked Civil War quilt blocks into the book I'm publishing this summer. It's been fun reading about how many of the block layouts are still used today.

Great post.

I hadn't heard of broken plates before but it makes perfect sense when you see the pattern that emerges :) Lovely to meet through the A to Z Challenge :)
