Blue and Brown log cabin quilt done

Good day and welcome to a cool Spring day in the American Midwest.  I am busy with my day job but have a finish to report.

Last year I was piecing and assembling a log cabin quilt in blues and brown.  I used all 1800's reproduction fabric, of which I have quite a bit.  I sent it out to the local long arm quilter, who does a great job.  I finally got around to trimming and binding it last weekend.

An overall view, in my messy sewing area:

The colors are close to the same value, but overall it reminds me of winter dusk - that deep blue sky and the brown of the ground and the trees.  I am calling this quilt Winter.

A close view of the fabrics used:

And a view of the back, showing the excellent quilting:

Well, sort of.  I prepared yards of blue binding for this project and had just enough.  Below is an image of my end join and the amount of binding I had left:  talk about playing chicken!

Visiting an old friend

I am visiting my parents' house this week and staying in the guest room.  I am re-aquainting myself with an old friend,

This is a vintage top, circa 1900, that I found at an antique fair.  I added new batting and backing and hand quilted it, and gave it to my mom for Christmas a few years ago.  The top was in excellent shape, except for one thin brown fabric, which had split in a few places.

I hand quilted it anyway.  Such a wide variety of everyday fabrics from the scrap bag.

Including some that were pieced together to make a patch big enough.

Some of these fabrics, or similar ones, have been reproduced by modern manufacturers.  I have some of the blues here, like the top blue with the lines.

Others, I wish they would reproduce!

A finish: Pink and green Fun with Bricks quilt

It's a wintry day in the American Midwest, and time to blog about a new finish.  I actually finished it Saturday, and it's now Wednesday.

I did a smallish quilt in blue and brown using Bonnie Hunter's Fun with Bricks pattern - found on her Free patterns page.  I wasn't completely done however!  I collected 1930's fabric in pink and "that green" to do the pattern again.  I hoped that the 'pinwheels' would stand out a bit more.  These 'pinwheels' form if you use just two colors and place the fabrics carefully.  Well, they didn't shown up as well as I thought they would.  It's still a pretty quilt:

about 54 by 66 inches, so good for a child.  A closeup view of one corner:

You can see the pattern of pink and green pinwheels here.  The border, which I bought just for this project, is more of an aqua color.  It sure looked like 'depression green' on line.  Oh well.

I used a cotton batting with scrim, and quilted in the ditch every 6 inches, and in the ditch in the borders.  Some child will like it.

This quilt has gone to a charity project at my church - the youth group is giving stuffed animals, blankets (and quilts) to children in the hospital.

Fun with Bricks is done

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  I have a finish to report.

Late in December 2021 I started a project in blue and brown 1800's reproduction fabrics  The pattern is by Bonnie Hunter, Fun with Bricks, on her free  patterns page. The start of the project is described in this post.   I am happy to report this is done, and finishes at 53 by 65 inches.

And a close up of the fabrics used.

I have quilted in the ditch, so you can't see the quilting here - which is just as well.  The batting is left over wool batting, rather puffy, especially where the pieces are overlapped.  A little challenging.

This quilt is going to a charity project at my church - the youth group is giving stuffed animals, blankets (and quilts) to children in the hospital.
