A finish: Pink and green Fun with Bricks quilt

 It's a wintry day in the American Midwest, and time to blog about a new finish.  I actually finished it Saturday, and it's now Wednesday.

I did a smallish quilt in blue and brown using Bonnie Hunter's Fun with Bricks pattern - found on her Free patterns page.  I wasn't completely done however!  I collected 1930's fabric in pink and "that green" to do the pattern again.  I hoped that the 'pinwheels' would stand out a bit more.  These 'pinwheels' form if you use just two colors and place the fabrics carefully.  Well, they didn't shown up as well as I thought they would.  It's still a pretty quilt:

about 54 by 66 inches, so good for a child.  A closeup view of one corner:

You can see the pattern of pink and green pinwheels here.  The border, which I bought just for this project, is more of an aqua color.  It sure looked like 'depression green' on line.  Oh well.  

I used a cotton batting with scrim, and quilted in the ditch every 6 inches, and in the ditch in the borders.  Some child will like it.

This quilt has gone to a charity project at my church - the youth group is giving stuffed animals, blankets (and quilts) to children in the hospital.

Fun with Bricks is done

 Good day, and welcome to my blog.  I have a finish to report.

Late in December 2021 I started a project in blue and brown 1800's reproduction fabrics  The pattern is by Bonnie Hunter, Fun with Bricks, on her free  patterns page. The start of the project is described in this post.   I am happy to report this is done, and finishes at 53 by 65 inches.

I have quilted in the ditch, so you can't see the quilting here - which is just as well.  The batting is left over wool batting, rather puffy, especially where the pieces are overlapped.  A little challenging.

More fun with Bricks, 30's reproduction style

 Good day, and welcome to a warmer, sunny day in the American Midwest!

I had some time to get into my sewing room this past weekend.  I am still inspired by the pattern Fun with Bricks on Bonnie Hunter's free patterns page, so I got to work cutting strips, and squares of unbleached muslin.  My version in dark blue and brown fabrics is shown in this post.  Let's try the same pattern in 1930's reproduction fabrics, just "that green" and pink:

This is just one block, exactly as Bonnie's instructions show.  Note the pink and green 'pinwheels' that form in the center diagonal.

How do four blocks look, laid side to side?

The value of the pink and green fabrics are very similar, so it's not as obvious as I thought it would be, but you do see the pinwheels forming.  Cool!  And there is a strong diagonal movement, as a number of my recent quilt finishes have.  I am waiting on some more fabric that I ordered from Reproduction Fabrics to freshen up the pinks and green with more variety, and some lengths for planned borders.  One always needs more fabric, yes?  And it's getting harder to find on line shops that carry mid 20th century reproduction fabrics.

Late 2021 start: Fun with Bricks

Hello and welcome on this cold windy day in the American Midwest! 

I have the beginnings of a new quilt project to share today.  I had out on my sewing table a range of dark blue and brown reproduction fabrics, piles from a log cabin top I worked on (fairly) recently.  I was inspired by the pattern Fun with Bricks on Bonnie Hunter's free patterns page, so I got to work cutting strips, and squares of unbleached muslin.  I started after Christmas in 2021.

Here is one square:

Following Bonnie's pattern exactly.  The values of the dark fabrics are the same, but note how "pinwheels" appear in the center if you orient the fabrics a certain way.  This could be interesting in scraps of two differing colors and somewhat different values.

Well, that block may not be too exciting.  But note the diagonal movement when you set some blocks together:

Set side by side, not sewn together yet.  I am still attracted to patterns with this kind of movement!  I hope I find time in the next few weeks to sew more blocks together!
