Life has gotten pretty strange when you spend a day thrifting - just to get an item for Vintage Thingy Thursdays! But so it was today. Not much luck in Goodwill but in St. Francis I found this Homer Laughlin bowl for 79 cents. Is that a good price? It's about 5 inches across, has some chips and some problems with the glaze, but I love the flowers.
It's sad though because although some items are there because some one did some Spring cleaning, some items are there because someone died, and the house had to be cleaned out.
happy a happy vintage day!

Oh, I so know what you mean....I feel so sad sometimes when I go to estate sales, it bothers me too! I love your bowl.....my aunt swears I buy stuff to post about, but really, I have enough here to last years in post!!! Have a great VTT....love the bowl....great price!
I love flowered china myself and your little bowl is very pretty. I agree with you estate sales, garage sales and the like can be very sad occasions!
First..I love this sweet little bowl.. and yes,and estate sale can be sad. But if you think about the person that owned and loved it...and would be so happy for that piece to have found such a loving new home. In
my mind,I wonder how a family can get rid of someones most loved little treasures.. and sometimes for a few cents. That's what I have problems with..
I have bought a few things for posts--mostly postcards that i can pair with my thingies, like the dog postcard I posted today.
I don't think I'll ever get to that day! Beautiful plate!
I love those flowers on the bowl too! I like to think that we're showing our respect and appreciation for these treasures that belonged to someone else by buying them and enjoying them all over again.
Homer Laughlin has a lot of nice pattern - including this one. The price was great. At the end of the day, anything is worth what you are willing to pay for it.
I have several Homer Laughlin bowls that belonged to my husbands Grandmother. You can go to this webpage to learn more about your bowl. http://www.ohioriverpottery.com/pages3/hlcline03.html
E49 is the year it was made 1949 and I belive the 8 is the month. I have to look it up when I get new pieces. Congratulations on a nice find!
I agree with you, I am always so happy to find a treasure but sad to think it was once someone else's special item....but when I say your bowl it really reminded me of my grandma! And that was a happy thought! :)
Lovely Homer Laughlin bowl!
At least with you shopping, these items are being bought by someone who appreciates them-just like the original owner did. It would be much sadder if they were trashed!
I love anything made by Homer Laughlin, and that bowl is no exception! It's really pretty, and you got it at a great price too. I know it's sad to think about someone's treasures ending up at a thrift store, but it's so much better than it all ending up in the garbage. Instead, we come along and buy it and give it a whole new life!
Happy VTT!
Carol
In reading blogs, there are a lot of people out there that likes the Homer Laughlin dishes. Your find is very pretty even chipped.
I have a hard time with estate sales as well because I can't help but think of all the memories and things that were left behind. This is a beautiful bowl and definitely a good price!
Have a wonderful day!

any excuse to go out vintage shopping is a good one:)
Yes that is a good price..... The bowl is lovely. the one thing I feel bad about at sales in family pictures. Didn't anyone want them?
I hate to say it, but I do look for things to purchase to blog about. Is that bad? Hope not, because I love it.
Great thrifty find! We have a small private thrift store in town and you know most of their *donations* are due to an older saint passing away...sad what some of the familes part with.
Blessings!
Gail
I know what you mean. I think why would anyone want to get rid of that? I also think that they're cleaning out someone's house and their own house must be all glass and chrome. Not mine! Lucky for us that we can adopt their discards!

While it's sad to look through someone's cherished possessions, I think it would make them happy to know that the things they loved will be loved by someone else as well.

I love the bowl! I try to avoid estate sales because usually the people who are having it are trying to make money. I went to one a couple of weeks ago and it was creepy because I knew the lady who had died. I felt like we were violating her privacy.
I really love your bowl and I know how you feel. Sometimes I too feel sad thinking maybe someone had passd away but the nice thing is you are now taking care of something they held onto. I'm sure they would be glad that their belongs have gone to a good home instead of being tossed. : )
Hello Viridian, I understand what you mean about someone else’s misfortune, however, I'm sure they would be thrilled to know that their chippy, sweet bowl found a happy home. Thank you for sharing. I also really appreciate your visit and your kind comment on my “Vintage Thingies Thursday, Photo Collage..."!

I have cruised the thrift shop aisles with the same intent LOL.
I don't know anything about this china.
In reference to why things are at thrift stores is the same issue with estate sales. They are especially sad because usually it means someone passed away or moved into a rest home. Sometimes seeing someone's life in their home makes buying things a little difficult.
What a sweet bowl! I understand about being a little sad about previous owners, but I also think that they would like to know their precious belonging is in a loving home again!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!
