Vintage Thingy Thursday: old CDV photo

I am participating in Vintage Thingy Thursday, hosted by Coloradolady. She has found a real treasure that will touch your heartstrings. Go see!

I have an old photo that is definitely vintage. I do look at the old CDV (carte de visite) photos at antiques stores, looking for an image that attracts me. I like the ones of children.

This one I picked up because it was not taken in a studio, but on the street. A pony has been brought to an urban neighborhood and a brother and sister are loving just sitting there. I love their expressions.

In the store window behind them, are some cans with labels I cannot make out, an ad for Morning Glory brand hams bacon and lard, and Shinola. Shinola is a shoe wax that, during World War II, became associated with the phrase: "He doesn't know s*** from Shinola." Not a saying any corporation would want to hear, concerning their product.

Shinola is a 20th century product, and if Wikipedia is to be trusted, the trademark was filed in 1929. Hmm, I would have guessed this photo to be older. What do you think?

Happy Vintage Thingy Thursday! Please check a previous post for how you can enter in my contest and win a fabulous prize! Well, a prize anyway.

Looking at this post gives me a GREAT brainstorm of an idea for a VTT post down the road a ways - - - it involves old photos and the Applebees down the road. I HOPE I remember to do it - - - -

I am very familiar with this kind of photo. In fact, I have one of my son on a little pony like this from many years ago. What a great memory you brought back.

These types of photos really tell a story if you look closely....I love the stuff in the storefront window....and makes me wonder what the occasion was to be dressed up and on a pony on the street! Great post!! Have a great VTT!

1920's seems about right for this. I have a very similar photo of my mom sitting on a mule with a big bow in her hair. She was born in 1921 and would have been around 7 years old when it was taken. Apparently photographers travelled around to schools and Sunday schools and took these pictures.
What a fun find!

I would have thought this was earlier, but the "big bow" fashion must have lasted a long time.

I love the photo.. I always wonder what has happened to their families, that they have found themselves to be in an antique shop. I'm happy when they find a loving home.

Adorable photo, and the era seems right to me. Have one of my late mother-in-law on a similar pony c. 1932, but she's dressed in cowgirl gear. :)

The Shinola slogan is from the 20/30's? Kind of surprising to me.

Wouldn't you love to know who these beautiful children were!! They were certainly dressed up. Love the storefront.

They could have been manufacturing it without a patent before 1929, but it also could be the early 30s, from family pictures I've seen.

My view was about 1930 too. The big bow hung on longer than you think...in fact, I have a similar picture of my mom on a similar pony in Great Falls, MT taken about 1938. My mom's shot had LOTS more fancy stuff on the bridle, martingale and saddle.
