Friday Finish March 30

Hello and welcome to Friday.
I picked up some new navy blue fabric in my travels and incorporated it into my ongoing project, Indigo Jane.  This is block D-10 or Battlefield:

Hmm, still need to trim this up to size! that is blue, not black fabric with bits of red.  I have picked up other blue fabrics - funny how each quilt shop carries a different inventory.  I have been helping out the local economy where I go!

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday triangle March 27

Hello and welcome!
I have been away at a profession work-related meeting so was not able to post this past week.  I did take a little sewing along with me however.

Hmm, seems to be leaning to the left.
Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.
This triangle is from the left side of the quilt as it is usually shown, 4th down from the top.  Fun to use a striped fabric here!  I prepared the block before travel, and appliqued in the evening in my hotel room, under the best light I had.  All you need is scissors and thread, a needle and a few pins. Easy to pack.

Blogging the A to Z challenge

Hello and Welcome.

This blog is going to do something a bit different from my musings and quilt sharings for awhile.
I am joining the A to Z blogging challenge and hope to make it through the week.
More on the challenge: http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
My category is Political/News - I know I rarely talk about current events here except for the A to Z blogging challenge.  But I feel very moved this year.
I will be blogging about Mass Shootings in the USA: Remember the Victims, starting with A for Aurora Colorado.  And yes, unfortunately there will be an entry for every letter.  I will concentrate on the losses, esp. the victims, never the shooters.
I expect pushback.  But I will continue, to try to present an even handed account of events, and remembering the victims.  As I said I feel moved by current events.

Friday Finish March 16

Hello and welcome to my regularly scheduled Friday blog post!
Today I am sharing some blocks that I did on vacation in Florida.  Yes, beach during the day, of course!  But quiet time at night was taken up with hand applique of the following blocks.

Continuing on with my thoughts in Tuesday's post:  These were like a meditation too.  I had packed up my supplies, and prepared my blocks for freezer paper on the bottom applique before I went to Florida.  Each evening, I would sit under the best light in the hotel room, my simple tools at hand - needle, thread, a few pins, scissors.  Working with white or navy blue thread, do the smallest applique stitch I can manage.  Take out basting stitches, remove freezer paper, and you are done.

Tuesday Quilt block March 13

Welcome to my blog, where I post my progress on blocks, and occasionally post a finish!
Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.
Doing these little (4.5 inches) blocks: sometimes complicated, sometimes more straightforward.  It's like a meditative walk, as through a labyrinth.  There is a certain process, and a certain order in which components are sewn together.

This is B-8, or Waterlily.

In this case, I adjusted the pattern for straight line piecing and assembled 4 sections, one for each star point.  Then, sew the 4 sections together, matching seam lines.  Press, and remove foundation piecing paper.  Then, applique each melon on, one by one, placing each one carefully.  Applique stitch by stitch.  I use freezer paper on the bottom and baste my seam allowances down.  (I struggle with needle turn applique.)  Cut a slit in the backing material, remove basting stitches and the freezer paper.  Press again, and admire.  It's a meditation.

Friday Finish: Triangle

Hello and welcome!
Today I have a Dear Jane triangle to share with you, involving piecing and some applique.
Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

This triangle is on the left side, as the Mother quilt is usually pictured, at the very bottom.  In the original 1863 quilt the fabric has faded to a pale brown and so I think this triangle gets overlooked.

Friday Finish Mar. 2

The Dear Jane quilt: the center quilt with 4.5 inch squares, and then those triangles, 5 by 8 inches. Once you start, you keep on going, to have enough.  For this current project in indigo and white, I plan to have 144 center blocks (12 by 12 layout) and therefore 48 triangles.  I can skip the 4 hardest ones.  Hmm!
Time to get going.

Here is Friday's triangle:

This one is known as Linda's Church in the Valley.
