Vintage thingy Thursday - Jan. 14

Check out Colorado Lady for more vintage treasures!

I bought this platter (about 15 inches across) at an antique mall and I'll admit I immediately lunged for it because of the power of memory.

My grandmother - my mom's mom, had this set. Well, I assume she had the whole set. By the time the first grandchild (me) came along, she may have had 5 or 6 more or less complete place settings and some serving dishes. The rest had suffered and been broken in a house with 5 children. Turkey at special dinners were always served on a platter just like this, and I was able to use one of the few remaining dinner plates. Not many plates survived the ensuing 10 grandchildren.

Grandma passed away in 1990 but I remember her with love today. She moved from the big house with 3 bedrooms, to a large apartment, then a small apartment, then to a tiny apartment in senior assisted living. I don't know what became of what was left of her china and serving platter. But this one is here to remind me.

It was made by Edwin M. Knowles China Co., and made in the USA. Apparently that really is '22 karat [sic] gold' around the edge.
Grandma, I miss you.

What a wonderful reminder of your Grandma! It's a really lovely pattern, and so cool that you were able to find a piece. If you ever want more, I'll bet there's lots of it on Ebay!
Happy VTT!

It's great to have a reminder of someone special. My sister has a platter from our grandma's set, too. I don't think she'd use the set if she had it, but having a platter is just perfect.

Such a lovely platter and post! The reminders of our Grandmothers and Mothers are such treasures and spark memories of special times. My Mom still has a few plates with the the gold lace edging...it's nearly faded away with so many washings. I'm going to have to rescue it soon! This is my First VTT and I've enjoyed visiting all the wonderful collectors and collections here. I hope you'll have time to stop by and see my Head Vases.

My grandmother's kitchen had jewel tea dishes. So now I am a nut about collecting them! Funny how grandmother memories have this effect on us.

I saw some dishese this past weekend that were just like the everyday dishes one of my grandmothers had--these things do bring back such memories--so glad you were able to get this--it's beautiful.

Maybe it really was grandma's just waiting there for you to find it? Wouldn't that be fun? It's possible, right?

Lovely platter and even lovelier memories.

I love this pattern. I have a few pieces myself. In fact I know a shop right now where I just saw some of this. Unfortunately I have no space for more plus when I bought my pieces they were dirt cheap and I am frugal (never cheap:)). Thanks so much for stopping by and saying hello. It is so nice to meet you.

Gorgeous platter! Yes, we always seem to pick the things we remember from our parents and our grandparents homes. I think emotional ties to family are even stronger than visual beauty when it comes to choosing what to purchase. I have some things that are probably kinda ugly to other people, but I love them because they were my Grandmothers.
