Tuesday quilt block Dec. 22

I have been busy - nearly a month away! And I 'had' to purchase fabric for the next star (last star) presented by Barbara Brackman on her blog.  I have really enjoyed this year's quilt along and the pattern was certainly easy.  Thank you Barbara, I learned so much.

The Nov. 25 fabric type was stick prints and cracked ice, a print style from 1810 - 1840.   Hard to find this fabric type now but I did my best:

With the bonus of some paisleys thrown in too.  Only one fabric this week.

My plans for my star blocks: I plan to split these into two groups, 'early' and 'late', and make two quilt tops with simple sashing.  If I don't have enough stars for the size I want, I will make more.  I certainly know more about the fabric types, and I have a deep stash with other fabrics I passed over.

I am linking up with Connie at Freemotion by the River and Quilt Story as I do most weeks I have blocks to share. Both blog hops have pictures of pretty quilt blocks and other projects. I am also joining Work in Progress Wednesday - some colorful and interesting projects there!

Tuesday Quilt block Nov. 24

Catching up after two weeks.... I had to order fabric for the first star below!

On Barbara Brackman's blog she recently described "early roller print clouds and storms".  Here is block number 1:

And last week, she described and showed examples of "corals and seaweed" prints.  My star is below.

This is an older Jinny Beyer print, and looks ferny or seaweedy to me.  As does the background fabric.

Tuesday Quilt fabric Nov. 10

Very busy for two weeks here!  No time or fabric for a Tuesday Quilt block.

Stars in a Time Warp:  This past week Barbara Brackman described provincial prints.  I have two that I purchased in Florence Italy (in 1994) and I still do not want to cut them up, not even for this project.  So I scanned the fabric!

Bright colors, spaced flower or mignonette motifs, white "halo" around them.  I also purchased this fabric in red, and purchased a border stripe:

Someday I will use these.  Not yet.

Tuesday Quilt block October 27

Back again with two bright quilt blocks for you! The fabric type profiled this week on Barbara Brackman's blog was black with bright fabrics from post - 1880 - what we called black with neon now.

These are hard to find as they are not reproduced very often.  Other than a Pilgrim/Roy fabric, what I could find in my stash is below.  Both are from an older fabric line called Matters of the Heart by Kaye England.

A wonderful fabric - can you imagine a Victorian gown done up in this?
And another:

Tuesday Quilt Block Oct. 20

It's been a whirl of a busy week!  But time for a new Tuesday Quilt block.
This week the Stars in a Time Warp color is cadet blue - a lighter gray-blue of the post 1880 period.

And another, using "well-aged" fabric from my stash:

Tuesday Quilt Block Oct. 13

It's Tuesday and time for another set of stars for Stars in a Time Warp series. This past week's color was claret red.

Also called wine red or burgundy.

A common color for after 1880 and into the new century, according to Barbara Brackman.
I like the fabrics from this time period, and I am now thinking of a new quilt project - oh no!

Tuesday quilt block Oct. 6

The fabric type of the week last week was black and gray designs of 1880 or later. Luckily I have a bit of this fabric.

Tuesday Quilt Block Sept. 22

Another busy week for me! But time to make two more starts for the Stars in a Time Warp series.  The fabric type profiled last week, Lancaster blues and Greek keys.  I have used up all my true repro Lancaster blues!  This first star is the closest I have in my stash.

The second star has a fabric from the "Dear Jane" line a few years ago, featuring a Greek key design.

Tuesday Quilt Block Sept. 15

Hello and welcome to another Tuesday quilt post!
This week's Stars in a Time Warp are Cretonnes, or later chintzes by another name.  The big florals have come back, this time printed well, without registration haloes, as described by Barbara Brackman.  My fabrics catch that style, but are at a smaller scale - great for these blocks!

And another one, with a black background.

Tuesday Quilt Block Sept. 8

A whirlwind day at work, and I did not have time to get these blocks up this morning.
Two more stars, in Bronze style brown prints (at least I think so).   The first star, definitely so.

A greenish, golden brown, with blue and pink figures.
The next one may be more of a madder color, but I wanted to use it in this project.

Tuesday Quilt Block Sept. 1

A busy day today at work!  Just a quick post, my current Stars in a Time Warp, keeping up with Barbara Brackman.  Last week's fabric; Later turkey reds.

I've had both of these fabrics for some time.  They really do look like late 1800's calicos.

Tuesday Quilt Project Aug. 25

Hello, and welcome to my blog! Here is another little project that may be destined to be a UFO.
I was fooling around with these commercially available templates to make crazy quilt blocks.  they finish at 8 inches square.  I am using 30's reproduction fabrics, and using the specialty stitches on my Janome sewing machine to embellish each seam.

I am using black sewing thread.  This imitates a style of crazy quilt I've seen at antique/vintage shops, and on-line, say, on ebay.

In the midst of this embroidery, I was not happy in how the top was turning out.  Now that most seams are done, I like it better.  Still, it's not a style that most people know, or would appreciate.  My plan is to finish the embroidery and then consider what to do.

Tuesday Project in Progress Aug. 18

This week something different - a quilt top in progress. It is the Bricks and Stepping Stones pattern - a free pattern from Bonnie Hunter's website. Do check out the pattern.

It works up easy and fast given Bonnie's excellent directions.  Mine will finish at 48 inches by 60 inches, and will be given to a local charity.  Right now it's just a top, though I do have batting and backing ready.

Tuesday Quilt Block August 11

Stars in a time warp:  The fabric of the week is floral trails, in an older style, say late 1700's to mid 1800's.  This first cheery fabric fits this description perfectly.

For my second star, I have a fabric I've wanted to use for awhile. A bit more regimented.

I'll be sad when this year-long exploration of fabric types is over.

Tuesday Quilt block August 4

This past week, Barbara Brackman discussed Lapis Blue, a fabric style and color I have seen before, but was not aware what it was called.  It is a clear blue, often with red, often in a chintz style.

Yeah, like that.  Or perhaps like:

These are fabrics that have been in my stash for many years - and I am very glad I purchased them.  They are from a fabric that had four different patterns printed in bands from selvage to selvage.  I wish I had purchased more than 1/2 yard at the time!

Tuesday Quilt Block July 28

This past week Barbara Brackman discussed early indigo prints - very early! Resist, discharge, block printed - they have a large scale and a certain look to them.  For this week I had to buy fabric from Reproductionfabrics.com - I did not have any of these in my stash.  Poor me :-)   Now I find I love this look and will buy these when I see them.

Against the pink this fabric looks almost black but it is a dark indigo.  Lovely.

And another.  This style survives in some blue bandannas.

Tuesday Quilt block June 21

This past week on Barbara Brackman's blog, she talked about Quercitron colors and arborescent chintz.  Quercitron gives fabric drab, olive to mustard yellow colors.  It's part of the color palette of older quilts.  Below are two fabrics from my stash that are olive, if not exactly what Barbara shows on her blog.

What will I do with my stars?  I have quite a few now, as I am making two a week.  I think I will make one quilt top of the "older" fabrics (chintz and fabrics like this week's stars) and another top with "younger" fabric.  Let's see how the rest of the year goes.

Tuesday Quilt Block July 14

Deep in Summer, I am still plugging along, making Stars in a Time Warp blocks.  I am glad I pulled out my pillar prints from the deep stash.  For they were featured last week on Barbara Brackman's blog.

They are not reproduced in the modern world very much.  I am glad I have a yard of the print above, and I wish I had more.  It is a large scale print: only 6 pillars and flowers across 44 inches of fabric, and a 3.5 inch block of fabric can only catch so much.  I bought it years ago.

This fabric is younger.  When it was almost all gone from the stores I decided I must have the pillar print.  All gone, except for one on-line retailer.  I purchased a bundle of mostly ugly fat quarters of a collection to get the one fat quarter I wanted - this pillar print.  Also a large -scale fabric, and only part is captured in this block.
