Top done: Over and Down Under in batiks

Good day and welcome to my blog.

I have a top finished, soon to go to a local long arm quilter that I like.  When you are retired, there is plenty of time to move projects forward.

I used a purchased pattern called Over and Down Under, and a roll up of bright batiks 2.5 inch strips:

My start on the project is described in this Blog Post.

You have to keep close track of the squares you are sewing together, and their order.  For example:  this set of squares is sewn together in the wrong order:

I had to rip this unit down to the individual squares and resew.  But, hurrah, I got the center section finished!

And then added borders:

The background fabric is a Kona solid called Charcoal.  A close up of one corner:

I really like this roll of batik fabrics.  Unfortunately, I don't think it's available anymore.

I am getting back from my long arm quilter 2 quilts today.  I'll blog about them next week.

New start: Over and Down Under in bright batik fabrics

Hello and welcome to my blog.

For National Sew a Jelly roll day (Sept.20) I started a new project using the pattern Over and Down Under, which I have used before.  On the 20th I just cut and prepped fabric, and started sewing on the 21st, continuing into yesterday.

The pattern and the jelly roll/roll-up I used:

The fabric is cut according to the directions, & laid out:

The gray squares on the upper right are my background fabric. There are doubles of most the colors.  I decided to have a rainbow gradient running sideways and up and down.

I pulled out a table to lay out my borders, so I wouldn't have to stoop down to the floor.

Starting on the upper left corner, I laid out the fabric squares on my sewing table and sewed them together, paying close attention to keeping them in order.

Here is one fourth (upper left quadrant) sewn together, not attached to the border yet.

The interwoven pattern is clear, but there is a bit of a mish mash in the middle where like colored squares come together.  I wonder if I should have set warm colors (dark red, red, orange, yellow) going sideways and cool colors (green, blue, purple) going up and down.  Well, it's too late for that now.  I will continue sewing this up this week.  When the center is done, the borders will be added.

Over and Down Under in pastels is done

Hello, and welcome to my blog!  I have a finish to report.

In August 2024 I blogged about my project using the pattern Over and Down Under, and the Georgia fabric line, specifically a jelly roll and a purple background fabric.

The pattern:

The soft pastel fabrics of the Georgia line did not lead to such a woven look.  But I decided this Spring to have the top machine quilted by a local long arm lady that I use - she does great work.  I picked a pink wide backing fabric.

Now to trim and bind.  I sew the double fold binding onto the back of the quilt, fold over to the front, and top stitch down.  I have gotten better at this, but my stitch length varies.  What thread to use to disguise my stitches in the purple fabric?

Purple thread on the left, but probably not enough to go around the perimeter.  King Tut variegated thread in the middle, but will it show up too much?  Medium blue thread on the right.  I ended up using this, and it blends in well!

The overall quilt, 56 by 56 inches:

And a close up of one corner, showing the quilting and the binding and how the blue threads blends in:

And it is done!  No home for this quilt throw yet.

Woven: Over and Down Under Pattern top finished

Good day, or should I say good evening.  I am busy in my day job and just now getting around to updating my blog.

My last entry was about a project, using the pattern Over and Down Under, and a fabric line called Georgia.  It's a line of pretty pastel fabrics and I was afraid the woven look would not develop.

Well I am now done with top, and you know, I rather like it.  It's like a Monet painting.  Up close, his paintings have blotches and swirls of paint.  But step back, and you see waterlilies.

My project:  up close you see squares of fabrics:

But overall, the woven look is there, if a bit subtly.

The top finishes at 56 inches square.  I like the deep purple fabric used in the border, and I saved some for the binding.
Next: I may try this pattern again with a jelly roll of bright batiks.  Or I may cut scraps for some other projects I have in mind.  All balanced with day job and family of course.
