Long term UFO to be quilted

Pictured here is a long term UFO I plan to be working on this Spring, and maybe into the summer. It is a vintage quilt top (maybe from around 1900?) that I had layered with new batting and new reproduction fabric for the back.

I found this top at an antique fair in Massachusetts, though the dealer told me he picked it up in Kalamazoo, MI.  It is all hand pieced, and in excellent condition.  I thought the best way to honor the original maker, and keep the period feel, would be to hand quilt it.  A daunting task, as it is at least double bed sized.  The hoop in the picture above is 14 inches in diameter!

To help this process, I took it to the longarmer I use and asked her to machine baste the top.  It cost some $$ but well worth it.

So a very old UFO, not even my own, but it is meditative to do a little hand quilting every day.

I am linking up with Connie at Freemotion by the River and Quilt Story as I do most weeks I have blocks to share. Both blog hops have pictures of pretty quilt blocks and other projects.

I have a page on Facebook: keep up with my infrequent quilt posts at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Viridian61/347674418583948?ref=hl

That's a beautiful quilt. Good for you to layer, baste, and quilt it instead of letting it lie around as just a top. I can see that it's large but what a feeling of accomplishment you will have when you finish it! (I'm hand quilting a quilt now though probably not as large as yours.)

I totally agree with the idea to hand-quilt - what a treat to be able to complete something with history - it will look fantastic when finished! Good luck!
