Pie birds project continues

 Welcome to my blog!

My project that I described last week continues.  It involves many pieces sewn together in a 10 inch block.

It's a challenge, but I have blocks in the style of Jane Stickle, many small pieces paper pieced to make a 4.5 inch block.

And I finished a smaller version of the Nearly Insane quilt.  Many pieces in a 6 inch block, finished.

So 65 pieces in a 10 inch block should take time, but shouldn't be that bad.

Here are seven blocks on the table.  Colors are about right.

And nine blocks together on the floor.  My camera on my phone makes the colors more vibrant here.

One challenge is that in sewing the flipped corners to make the black geese, about one in ten pieces gets pulled down the hole in my plate on my sewing machine.  This is user error.

I have to rip out the snarled stitches and partially restitch.  This slows me down, and is why I have done only 5 blocks this past week.  I will go until I run out of fabric strips that I have pre-cut for this project.

Your blocks are beautiful! I have the same problem with my machine when sewing triangles. Do you know what the solution to it is?

Love those pretty log cabin blocks! I use a leader ender to avoid the fabric pulling down but sometimes these things just happen. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

I love ALL of your current projects, Viridian! Regarding those triangle points getting chewed up: Do you have a straight stitch plate on your sewing machine? It makes a huge difference because it’s the much wider needle hole in a zigzag stitch plate that allows the pointy fabric bits to get jammed down like that. A straight stitch plate has a needle hole that is only a little bit larger diameter than the largest sewing machine needle. Even if a straight stitch plate did not come with your machine, it should be available as an accessory from your sewing machine dealer and it’s worth its weight in gold for the frustration it saves. I keep my straight stitch plate on my machine 90% of the time and only take it off if I’m sewing with a stitch that actually requires movement of my needle from side to side, like a blanket stitch, blind hem, zigzag, etc.

Rebecca: I have only one stitch plate for my old circa 1989 Kenmore. I don't know if I could find one for this old of a machine, but it's worth investigating.

I too love all of your blocks and those black geese blocks layout to make the most awesome design! As far as the getting stuck in the hole issue, does this happen when you start? If so, maybe chain piecing is the answer. If your feed dogs always have a bit of fabric under them, there is less probability of the fabric getting sucked into that hole! A single hole throat plate would be helpful; but, if you can't get one, maybe chain piecing will help. If you don't leader/ender, use a fabric scrap to create a start/stop piece. I hope that makes sense!

Being a favorite pattern of mine I can’t wait to see these develop!!

All your blocks are wonderful, Viridian. I do hate it when my machine tries to eat my fabric. UGH. Have you tried using a leader-ender? That does help most of the time! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great week.

Oh, I love this very little block, is it paper pieced? Your points are very precise. Love the blocks with flying geese too, they look wonderful on the floor/design wall! My sewing machine sometimes does the same thing with the points but not when chain stitching. I see you already have lots of tips above for improving the problem! Thank you for sharing your inspiring blocks and linking up.

On your last post I said I loved that block but wasn't going to make it. But now that I keep looking at your blocks the more I think I might have to make them. I really love them.

Are you using the single hole needle plate? This helps a lot.
