Interim project: Flying geese units

 Good day, and welcome to my blog.

When I am done with a project and don't have a new one in line, I piece units such as Broken Dishes or Flying Geese.  This week it's been flying geese units, in 1800's reproduction fabrics.

I use the no waste 4 at a time method shown in this PDF.  I know this is not for everyone but if I keep a scant seam allowance, my geese units turn out just fine.

What blocks to put together?  Perhaps Dutchman's Puzzle, finishing at 8 inches square:

Or Starlight Geese, finishing at 10 inches square:

Hmm, we'll see.  In the meantime, I am sewing 1/4 to the side of drawn pencil lines, cutting units apart, and pressing the units.  I will continue until I have enough for a single bed quilt.  Oh, and I purchased more fabric for sashing and binding for the eventual quilt.  😉

Flying geese top almost done

 Good day, and welcome to my blog.

In my last blog post, I shared an 8-inch block using flying geese units, and an interesting set.

Today I report that I finished the blocks and started assembling the diagonal rows for the on-point setting.

Here is the top with setting triangles in place, minus borders:

The border will be 4 inches wide (cut at 4.5 inches), using a navy print fabric I had held aside.  I had just enough:

Yes, that's what is left. I will add the borders later this week.

A Tale of two neutral fabrics

I had ordered a yard of a Kona Solid fabric in a more warm beige tone that my usual Kona Snow, to see if I liked it.  I did, and I went ahead and ordered 1.5 yards of this color, I thought, from etsy.  I was sure that I had originally ordered the champagne color.  So that is what I ordered from etsy.  I wanted it for the setting triangles for this project.  

Well, when it arrived, it was clear they were two different colors.

Triangles:  Champagne color.  Folded yardage:  the original purchase.  The color difference is more obvious in person.  I used the Kona Champagne in my quilt top.  I'll use the yardage in another project.

New block and interesting set

 Good day, and welcome to my blog.

I was looking in the book All-time Favorite Scrap Quilts from That Patchwork Place, and saw an interesting project called Good Fences make Good Neighbors.

I didn't want to make pinwheel blocks so I played around on graph paper and came up with an 8 inch block with flying geese, not a 10 inch block as in this pattern.

But I still used the suggested setting.  Here are some blocks, laid out on a table.

I am making the flying geese units using the no waste 4 at a time method.  You can see a PDF of how to do this HERE.  I am using reproduction fabrics, 1850 - 1890 style.  

I have 46 of 50 blocks done.  The center portion should be 56 by 79 inches in size (EDIT: 56 by 67 inches!) and then add borders.  I still have to square all the blocks and cut the outside setting triangles.

So is this an original block?  Maybe.  Let me know in the comments if you have seen it before.  Is it an original quilt pattern?  Definitely not, as I am using the setting I saw.

Flying Geese Pattern: a start on Starlight Geese

 Good day and welcome to my blog!

It's a beautiful day in the American Midwest.  I'd like to share with you what I've been working on for the last few days.  

I think I'm on a roll with flying geese units.  I created some blocks in the Cups and Saucers pattern, from the Patchwork Square website.  I blogged about them previously.  Well the finished blocks are in a pile in my sewing room, as I continue forward making more flying geese units for this pattern:

A little out of focus, but you can find the Patchwork Square pattern here.  I am switching the values of the pieces:  Geese units are in feedsack fabrics, background is Kona Snow.

Here is what I have so far:

Laid out on my design floor, so that is my carpet in between the blocks.  I am using these instructions for no-waste flying geese, making 4 at a time:

This is fun, but as each block finishes at 10 inches square, it will take a while to get up to a reasonable quilt size.

Geese are now a Dutchman's Puzzle

Good day from a rainy Midwest location.  Yes, we need the rain! 

In my last post, I outlined how I was making flying geese units with a no-waste method.  I am assembling them into Dutchman's puzzle blocks, finishing at 8 inches.  Lots more blocks got done this weekend and yesterday.  I tried laying them out side by side, to see what they looked like:

My blocks are very scrappy and I don't like this setting - too busy and overwhelming to the eye.

How about on a neutral sashing fabric?  (Gray that I had, not ironed - oops!)

Better.  But I think I would like a darker gray.  More fabric purchasing is in my future!  And making more blocks.  I have about 35 right now.  And I have a pretty good pile of cut fabric squares left.

I have travel this July, but I should be able to work on these blocks this week.

Geese are starting to fly

 Good day and welcome to my blog.

After finishing my recent Nearly Insane project I was at loose ends  You know that quietness after a big project is done?  So I did other things for a week, but I came back into the quilting space and started sewing up flying geese using a no waste method.

I had a number of sewn geese from a previous project - many geese in columns in this finished quilt from 2017.  And since I cut without counting, many cut big squares and little squares for the no waste method.

Since I had already done geese in a column, I decided to try a different block.  I believe this is called Dutchman's Puzzle:

Laid out on the carpet. Each "goose" is 4 by 2 inches finished.  I have gone very scrappy so these blocks will definitely get a dark sashing - maybe dark gray, navy blue, or brown, to tone things down!

I am also finding that my geese are not all turning out the same size - time to pay attention to my method and be as accurate as I can.
