New log cabin project is farther along

The new UFO I showed last week is farther along.  I have a better view of what it is going to look like, and I like it.

Mission: to use blue and brown Civil War and 1800's reproduction fabrics, in a pleasing fashion.  Result: with the log cabin pattern swirling in my head, I made dark log cabin blocks, browns on one side, blues on the other, with a yellow center block. I am reminded of a winter sky at twilight, and the winter browns of trees and ground.  I am not tired of this pattern yet.  I have 38 blocks, and I laid them out for a photo:

Not sewn together yet.  Each block finishes at 10 inches square, and a 60 inch square quilt is an odd size.  So more sewing is in my future.  I cut more strips this week to get ready.

In the meantime, I am distracted by another project.  Isn't that always the way?  Maybe I'll show this yet-another-project next week.

Why not a new UFO?

... A new UFO (un-finished object) to carry into the New Year?  I sometimes play the UFO game.  I am part of an internet group where we keep track of UFO's and try to get them done.  Any project started in 2020 or earlier officially becomes a UFO on Jan. 1 2021.  I try and cut some new projects at the end of December, just so that I can finish them in the new year.

And, I have a lot of Civil War and 1800's reproduction fabrics, that I really should use up, instead of purchasing new fabric.  I have used my reds and shirting fabric, and pinks and shirtings, in previous projects.  I found I had lots of browns and blues, so started cutting 1.5 inch strips for yet another log cabin quilt.  Yes I have the log cabin pattern on my brain.

I plan on having 4 'logs' on each side of this block, for a 10 inch block.  This is what I have now to show you:

Just 2 rounds on each side but you see the look.  I will not have a light/dark contrast but I am hoping for a rich look when I am done.  More work will be done on these blocks later today.

Avignon Picnic bound and done

Hello and welcome to my blog.

First an update on my last post, on the pink and white log cabin quilt:  It is back from the quilter's!  Swirling feathers are quilted all over.  I may not get to trim and bind it until after Christmas, or even early next year.

This post:  a finish, thought not a home for this one yet.  The pattern is Avignon Picnic, and the top is done in unbleached muslin and 1930's reproduction fabric.  Close to my usual finished size, about 60 -70 inches by 80 or 85 inches.

And a close up, as I always do:

You can't really see it, but the quilting pattern is leaves.  The top was pieced in 2018 (I think).  I have UFO's much older than that!  Maybe I'll get to them in 2021.  One can always plan.

Pink and white log cabin top: it's going to be a big quilt

Hello and welcome to my blog.  I have been busy at my day job, and busy off and on in my sewing room.  Many pink and white strips have been sewn together to make 10.5 inch (unfinished) log cabin blocks.  Imagine my dismay when I measured some blocks and many were 10.75 inches, and some were 10.5 inches. Clearly I need to work on sewing an exact 1/4 inch seam.  And my dismay when the clear plastic shoeboxes I use to hold my strips were still half full after I was done!  I do tend to not count pieces and to overcut.

I went ahead and sewed the blocks together, following the seam allowances of the smaller blocks, and if some outer 'logs' are a little bit skinnier, no one will notice.  I finished on Monday night.  It's a monster quilt top, for me!  9 by 10 blocks, or 90 by 100 inches:

Only a portion of the top.  My floor space is about 70 by 90 inches.  Curiously (or not) most of my bigger quilts are 70 by 90 inches.

A close up:

Many different reproduction pinks, shirtings, cream fabrics here.

On Tuesday I took this top and backing fabric to the long arm quilter I use.  She will add swirling feathers to this, and use a wool batt.

Next: I am not done with the log cabin pattern.  I have many blue and brown Civil War reproduction fabrics to bust.  That is my next project to cut before the New Year.
