Tuesday Quilt: Off to the long-armer!

Hello and welcome.
I am getting spotty internet on our home network so I am making this quick.
I have a feedsack quilt top that I thought about quilting myself:

This is made from new off white fabric and feedsacks I have collected myself or bought off ebay.
But, the top is 80 inches by 80 inches, hard to push through my machine, and my tension seems to be off when I machine quilt.  Or I get tucks on the front.  So it is off to the local long arm quilter that I use - who does a very nice job indeed.

Some of those feedsacks may be 'ugly' but it all comes together and looks authentic - as opposed to when you use all 'pretty' fabric.
To be even more authentic, i am using feedsacks on the back:

At an antique fair I was lucky enough to find 4 feedsacks of the same pattern.  When I realized this would be a bit short I started looking on ebay and was even luckier to find a 5th feedsack of the same design!  A pieced back it is!

Wednesday finished quilt Feb 20

I was very busy yesterday at my paying job so did not post my usual Tuesday quilt block or finish.  But I do have a finish! A jelly roll race quilt:

It is pieced from a Jelly roll of Hoffman Christmas/Winter fabrics with silver accents.  Another Hoffman holly fabric for the border.  I had fun doing this one!  True it is done in February but we can use it as a throw next Christmas.

Tuesday quilt: current progress

Hello and good afternoon from here.  I am running late today.
I'd like to share my current progress on a long standing UFO. (Unfinished object).  I started cutting pieces for this in 1993 (!) and really ramped up piecing in 2017.  I have been hand quilting this off and on in 2018 and in the beginning of this year.

A double wedding ring quilt, with 30's reproduction fabrics and a soft pale orange background fabric.  I am down to the last corner of the quilting - you can see my hoop in the upper right of the photo.
Pattern and templates from Shar Jorgenson Quilting in the Heartland, and the quilting template is from her company too.  I doubted I could find another that would fit the size of the rings and the "melons".
I marked the quilt in pencil, sometimes unfortunately with a heavy hand.  Below is a close up showing fabrics used and the quilting.

Overall the quilting has been a meditative experience.  Daunting at first, thinking of all the quilting ahead of me.  But I am almost done!
Next daunting step:  Trim, and apply bias binding by hand, both sides (no machine work).  I think single fold binding.  I've never bound a quilt with curved edges so this shall be interesting!  Any advice appreciated.

Gifted table runner

Hello and welcome to my regular Tuesday Quilt post.
Today I am sharing a picture of a table runner I made for my mom.  I have just one photo, just a portion of the runner:

It is about 12 inches by 64 inches.  The two blocks are repeated several times.  The pattern is from McCalls quilting magazine I believe - a download I accessed some time ago, so I do not know if it's still available.  I like the pale gray fabric - a Stonehenge fabric that looks like marble.

This was gifted over Christmas.  No more photos!  Mom loved it.

Tuesday quilt top

Hello and welcome!
I am sharing a quilt top I made this past week, all from cast offs and leftovers: bits from a Christmas quilt and a Halloween quilt; old stash rediscovered (I mean fabric from the 1990's!); fabric purchased for a watercolor quilt (remember those?); fabric ordered on line that was not the color I expected; fat quarters from a pack that were uglier than I thought.

To use up this fabric, I cut bricks 3.5 inches by 9.5 inches (3 by 9 inches finished) and made strips 6 bricks long.  For about half the strips, I added a 'half-brick' cut 3.5 by 5 inches.  Alternate your strips as in brickwork or as you can see in the photo.  I have 27 rows for a size of 63 inches by 81 inches, before borders.

And that border!  The black fabric with lavender flowers is a VIP print (remember those?) from the 1990's - I found I had a yard of it.  And the green fabric - I don't remember why or when I purchased it, but I had 2.5 yards, so I must have been thinking of borders.  Use it up!  I think I will go no-buy or low-buy this year, and use up the old stash.  I plan on piecing a back for this one, out of yardage I also found while excavating for this quilt.

Happy New Year, and Tuesday quilt top

Happy New Year!  Wishing the best for you in 2019.
I was busy over the Christmas break.  I finished quilting and trimming the log cabin quilt described in my previous post.
I traveled to visit family and visited a quilt store (of course) and purchased a set of 2.5 inch strips (a jelly roll)  in Christmas Hoffman fabrics, and matching yardage for a border.
I sewed up a jelly roll race quilt top with these fabrics.  It's the third one I have done.  One must let go of matchy-matchy tendencies and go with the flow, believe in the process.
A 2017 Christmas jelly roll top is shown in a previous entry in my blog.
Now for the 2018 version!

Hoffman winter/Christmas fabrics with silver highlights on them, green holly border.  I am sorry I don't have a close up picture.  This top is now on the "to be quilted" pile.

Tuesday quilt in progress Dec. 18

Hello and welcome!
In this busy holiday season, I am finding time to work on my current project, a log cabin quilt.
I finished the blocks in 2017 and didn't want to trim them up at that time.
Well, early this month I pulled them out and trimmed them square (though not all to the same size).  I was as careful as I could be in sewing them, but I found I did have some variation in size!
Well, after trimming, I might as well set them on the floor and audition a zig zag design.
And since they are laid out, I might as well sew them together, right?
And find that border fabric I set aside for this project.
And then cut and add the border.
And layer it up, and pin baste.
And start quilting it on my own machine.

I am still in the midst of quilting this sandwich, but I am over half done!  Some problems with tension but I am doing OK.  It's about 80 by 75 inches, so a bit of a struggle to shove through the harp of my trusty old Kenmore.

Tuesday finish Dec. 4

Well the holidays are here and it's busy at chez Viridian!!!

I have not been able to continue on my Dear Jane blocks and triangles, or maybe my mojo is missing.  Instead I worked these past two weeks on a Bricks and Stepping stone project.  (Pattern by Bonnie Hunter)  I had a specific recipient in mind and a deadline.

And a close up, showing the variety of fabrics - reproductions, old stash, and batiks:

The dark batik border, fabric left over from another project, actually sets off the quilt quite well.  Simply machine quilted by me on my regular sewing machine, finishing at about 60 by 70 inches (I think).

The recipient loved this.  That made me happy!

Tuesday quilt Nov. 13

Hello and welcome to my blog!
I was at a conference and couldn't blog last week, now I am back at it.
I finished a long term UFO a few weeks ago!  It was stalled at the borders.  I purchased some fabric (just enough for borders, backing and binding) to finish this off.

This Courthouse Steps pattern quiltlet is about 30 inches by 30 inches.  Each log is only 1/2 inch wide!  There is a lot of fabric in those seam allowances!  Very simply machine quilted.  All reproduction fabric too.  No particular use for this one yet.
