A finish: Film at Five Pattern

 Welcome back to my blog!  I have been very busy in my day job but I have a finish to report.

In looking back at my blog entries I found that I started this Film at Five project (Pattern from Wedding Dress Blue Blog) in Spring of 2020, in the heart of Covid lockdown.  I used scraps and pieces of vintage fabric, and for background I used unbleached muslin that was left over from quilt backs.  No stores were open so I had to dig through my off cuts to get enough for the size I wanted.  Here is the final finished quilt, approximately 75 inches square:

Well, a bit of keystoning there!  A closer view is below.  I used smaller squares that the pattern called for, and adjusted my piecing.

I like the "Sprocket" borders.  Just one more close up:

Showing the vintage fabrics and feedsacks that I used.  This is quilted by a local long armer that I use frequently - she does a great job.  The quilting is a pattern of simple leaves on a vine.  The quilt has a thin cotton batting and is bound in the same fabric as the background fabric - more leftover quilt backing.

Film at Five is now a top

First off, this pattern is from the blog of Wedding Dress Blue, and I have had my eye on it for some time.
The start of this project is described in this post.
Continuing on is described in this post.
Well in this time of COVID-19 I soldiered on and finished all the sashing, used up almost all my unbleached muslin on hand, and now have a top:

I used 2 inch squares to start, so each square is 1.5 inches finished.  Whew!  It turned out a bit bigger than I had initially planned.
Now to decide about quilting it: myself on my trusty domestic machine?  Or sent it out to a local long-arm quilter?  Well I will decide later.
This top is now off my 'design floor' and a set of red and white log cabin blocks has taken its place.

Film at Five continues

In this time of COVID-19 I am continuing my (nearly) mindless piecing of borders for my interpretation of Film at Five, a pattern by Wedding Dress Blue. Starting the project post is here.   I have the blocks of 25 pieces done, and I am piecing the borders.  The borders, which remind one of film sprocket holes, are part of the original pattern.

I did have a large piece of off-white fabric cut off from a backing, to use here.  Wow these borders take a lot of fabric!  I have used up the large piece and I have dug into my mound of cut off backing and batting to find another large-ish piece.  And I did find such a piece.  Good for me for saving wide backing, because all the quilt and fabric shops are closed.

This quilt will be 6 blocks by 6 blocks and turned out a bit bigger than I originally anticipated.  Here is a close up of a few blocks sewn together:

Film at Five - beginning

Catching time as I can this week between teaching on line and supervising children to do more sewing done on this project, the Film at Five pattern by Wedding Dress Blue.

I had finished 36 25 - patch blocks, when I stopped and counted.  A good place to stop, a fairly big quilt.  Yesterday and today I worked on the sashing and corner units.  I have more to go, but I laid out what I have to get an idea of what the final top will look like.

Just 6 blocks but it's a beginning.  More white fabric to cut!  I am using a big leftover piece from a wide backing fabric.

We are well here and lucky to be in a good place in this time of COVID-19.  We have food, a good home, and secure jobs.  I still worry about my kids and family, and about others affected by this virus.  Many many people sick and dying, their loved ones, and those who have lost jobs.  April 2020 is going to be a tough month.  I will definitely label this quilt as a COVID-19 quilt when I am done.

Piecing in the time of corona virus

Well I am back to this blog after a month away.  I had been working on my previous project - triple stars by Kim Brackett.

Then March happened, specifically mid-March to now.  My University suspended in person classes, then the state went to stay at home orders.  You would think that meant more time for piecing and quilting, right?  No, three grown children to supervise, one special needs.  And I couldn't settle down to a project that needed thinking skills, with all the things on my mind, anxiety, etc.  So why not some mostly mindless sewing, say of simple  2 inch squares?

I am sewing these together into 25 patch units, for the pattern Film at Five by Wedding Dress Blues.  Her directions are for 2.5 inch squares. I am using 2 inch squares (the pattern is easy to modify) and real feedsack and vintage fabric obtained at flea markets, antique fairs, and ebay.  I am just sewing away and counting blocks as I finish them.  I have no idea how big this will be when I am done.

I like the way this is turning out.  Not pictured here:  the sashing and corner units, which I am also piecing.  If this COVID-19 continues I may start another version of this, in 2.5 inch squares, using all my scraps.
