UFO Finish: Half square triangles

Hello, and welcome to my blog!

I can report on the finish of a UFO (Un-Finished Object).  It is part of a game I play - but more on that below.

A series of half square triangle blocks and shirting fabrics in-between:

It is a pattern from the book Preserving History by Julie Hendrickson.  I decided against borders and it is now 56 by 74 inches in size.

Each shirting square and half square triangle finishes at 2.5 inches square!

I blogged about its progress:  https://viridian61.blogspot.com/2024/06/current-progress-on-reproduction-project.html

and the start of the project in Dec. 2022:  https://viridian61.blogspot.com/2022/12/two-new-starts.html

A close up of the fabrics, including shirting fabrics used is below.  I have so many reproduction fabrics.  I am imagining a woman using fabrics like these in 1880 - 1890.

Now for the game:  I am part of an online quilting group (all quilting chat, no politics, no religion) called Stashbusters.  We aim to curb new purchases and bust our stash, sharing patterns and finishes.  Some of us sign up for the UFO game.  Each person declares how many UFO's they have, and sends in two fat quarters and $2 as an entry fee.  An intrepid member keeps track of us and our finishes.  As people finish a UFO they drop to the bottom of the list.  Everyone else rises one or more positions.  When your name reaches the top, you are queen of the UFO's and reign for a week, or until you have a finish.  No finish?  A penalty fat quarter is mailed in.  And the fat quarters?  Every time you have a finish your name goes "in the hat", and every quarter and at the end of the year, a random name is drawn to win a subset of the submitted fabric.

I aim to NOT become queen!  I was #4 on the list and so I trimmed and bound this UFO to have a finish, and drop to the bottom of the list.

I do have permission from the list owners to post this.

Two new starts

Good Day, and happy holidays!  I am back to my blog after a busy time at my day job.  I want to record 2 new starts, that will become 'official' UFO's after the first of the year.

These patterns are from the book Preserving History: Patchwork Patterns Inspired by Antique Quilts by Julie Hendricksen.  First, a snow ball type block, in fabric from around 1890 - 1900:

Blues, reds, wine fabrics, and shirtings.  Blocks finish at 4 inches so a bit of work is ahead of me.

Then, another pattern from the same book:

Same fabrics, with some earlier reds, and browns, and double pinks.  Each white square of shirting fabric is cut at 3 inches to finish at 2.5 inches.  Lots more cutting and sewing here too!  I'll need quite a bit of cutting to get to a reasonably sized quilt top.

Is anyone having a linky party this week?  I'll find out.

Growing Up Odd begins

Good Day, and welcome to my blog!

In the waning days of the old year, I cut 2 inch squares for yet another project.  Yes, a UFO, officially as of Jan. 1 2021.  This is a project I've had my eye on for awhile, the Growing Up Odd quilt pattern, on the Wedding Dress Blue blog.  Since I was making quilts with civil war and 1800's reproduction fabrics, I cut a few extra squares for this project.  It looks like a lot of squares in the box, but boy, a lot are used in this pattern.

Below, my beginning segments, laid out on the back of a quilt, not sewn together just yet:

This makes one block when sewn together with sashing.  I'll be using unbleached muslin left over from quilt backing.  Yes a bit of brown and pink, a little yellow, not much green.  That's what I have been using lately.  This will be a long term, pick up project, in between other projects.  I may cut some more fabric from stash too!

Long term UFO to be quilted

Pictured here is a long term UFO I plan to be working on this Spring, and maybe into the summer. It is a vintage quilt top (maybe from around 1900?) that I had layered with new batting and new reproduction fabric for the back.

I found this top at an antique fair in Massachusetts, though the dealer told me he picked it up in Kalamazoo, MI.  It is all hand pieced, and in excellent condition.  I thought the best way to honor the original maker, and keep the period feel, would be to hand quilt it.  A daunting task, as it is at least double bed sized.  The hoop in the picture above is 14 inches in diameter!

To help this process, I took it to the longarmer I use and asked her to machine baste the top.  It cost some $$ but well worth it.

So a very old UFO, not even my own, but it is meditative to do a little hand quilting every day.

I am linking up with Connie at Freemotion by the River and Quilt Story as I do most weeks I have blocks to share. Both blog hops have pictures of pretty quilt blocks and other projects.
