Vintage Thingy Thursday: Ashtray or spoon rest?

I am joining Coloradolady this week for Vintage Thingy Thursday.

Time: an afternoon last week
Place: a Goodwill store I haven't visited in a long time
Item: a leaf-shaped plate that I did not immediately recognize as an ashtray. That is how uncommon smoking is among my friends and family.
Markings: Back: Orion China, made in Japan. "Hand Painted"
Front: Sweet pink rose with two buds, gold accented rim. I'm not sure what is hand painted unless it is the wisps of gold on the bottom.
Condition: used, still pretty!

Yes I thought this would be good as a spoon rest for the stove top, and I am using it as that, but the shape is not the best.
It's hard to believe anyone would have such a pretty ashtray, but someone did. The gold accent is worn in some places, and there is a chip or two, but that is OK.

Grandma's things- Vintage Thingy Thursday

Here are two little 'dust catchers' that were originally owned by my grandmother. I saw the blue one as a little girl in her house, and in the way of whiny grandchildren, I asked if I could have it. Of course was the answer. Oh I just loved that blue, and the painted flowers as a child. I thought it was the most beautiful little pitcher.

Well, time flows by, and some years ago now my grandmother passed away. She had moved into an assisted living apartment that was much smaller than the old house. There wasn't much left for my mom and her siblings to clean up and distribute. But, my mom picked up the little pitcher on the right for me, remembering the story of the blue pitcher and how much I loved it.

I don't remember seeing the white pitcher anywhere in her house. It is marked Japan on the bottom. These two sit on my kitchen windowsill.

I miss you grandma.

Vintage Thingie Thursday

Time is flyin' this May and it's time for Vintage Thingie Thursday, now hosted by Colorado Lady, not Apron Queen.

This little item is from one of my favorite thrift stores. It is stamped Japan on the bottom of the biggest house. While it is true that these houses are made of thin veneer, it is also true that the windows and doors are not painted, but inlaid colored veneer. So there is a bit of craft involved in what is probably a tourist gift item. And, only 69 cents!
