Playing with Air Castle blocks

I am part of a mailing list of quilters, and recently, a challenge was issued by a member: work with one pieced block, and play with it, try variations, different fabrics, etc.

She used the Air Castle block and I decided to follow - I had never worked with this block before.  The pattern source is:

I made my blocks 9 inches square (when finished).  My first two:  playing with fabric types: real feedsack fabric (top) and late 1800's reproduction fabric (bottom).

Note I also simplified the corner treatment in the top block.  I kept trying different fabrics:

No, I don't like that yellow for the star points.  I like a stronger, darker color in that position.

And I quite like the feedsack blocks.  I have concentrated on making more of those this week.  Here is what I have so far:

Such fun playing around!  Let yourself go and play too.

Isn’t it interesting to see how different fabrics or placement of fabric changes things! Lovely blocks! I really like the feedback stars!

Your blocks are looking great. I bought Electric Quilt so I could play around with fabric colors without actually having to do the sewing. LOL
