A few weeks ago I had a cutting party and cut many strips and squares to use up scraps and fat quarters of Civil War reproduction fabrics. They were overflowing a number of clear shoe boxes. In the box below I have lots of strips 2.5 inches wide, and 12 to 20 inches long. I started trimming these to the sizes needed for a Crayon Box quilt (pattern by Bonnie Hunter, on her Quiltville web page.)
The trimmed strips are at the bottom. Now you may say, "Hey, Viridian, didn't you just make a Crayon Box Quilt using 30's reproduction fabrics?" Well, yes I did. But I like this pattern and it uses up so much fabric! If your fabric has a theme and you have many different fabrics, it turns out so well!
My question: Above is standard shoe box, filled with 2.5 inch strips. How big a quilt can I make from this cut fabric? I have already cut quite a few block pieces and the box is only slightly less full. I am thinking a full or a queen sized quilt. Amazing how big a top once can get from a shoe box of fabric. I'll keep track of this project and report back when I have a finished top.
School has started and I haven't been able to work on other current projects, such as the double 4 patch. Maybe next week.

We quilters often adopt a "Go To" scrap project. I've been thru several over the years. Apparently, Crayon Box is your current "Go To" scrap project. Can't WAIT to hear to verdict of how big a quilt you can make from a shoe box filled with fabric! I'm planning a similar experiment from a gallon baggie of scraps.
I don’t have the answer to your question, but I am wondering how many quilts it takes to empty my scraps bins! It doesn’t seem like I am making a dent!
I love scrappy quilts and especially Bonnie Hunter's patterns. I've made several but have ner made the Crayon Box. I wonder if I can make a quilt from each of her patterns in my lifetime. I'm looking forward to her mystery quilt even though I'm still working on last year's. I better get busy LOL.
I would love to know this answer! I have often wondered how many quilts I could make from a given pile/box/bin/bag/basket of scraps. I will be watching this experiment with enthusiasm!
my experience... 3 quilts! haha!! It never seems to end - that fabric multiplies overnight and then you are starting a second one... Can't wait to see how yours turns out!!
King size and the box won't be empty!
I am always amazed at how few strips you need for a big sized quilt. I think you will end up with a lot of fabric leftover. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
