I found this crib sized quilt (48 by 33.5 inches) at a thrift store where I have found other old quilts. This one is in bad shape. It's a bit ugly, with mixed 40's and 50's fabrics making up the 4 patches, with an ugly fabric in between the rows.
The backing is a cheater fabric. The filler appears to be a loosely woven cheesecloth type of fabric. It is tied, not quilted.
But somebody really tried to make a nice looking quilt, with the materials she had, and this may have been some child's "lovey".
Visit Coloradolady for more vintage thingies. They just have to be vintage, not pretty. Though she has some very pretty plates this week.

I would have snatched that little quilt up too! I love the fabrics, you just can not find fabric like that anymore....unless you are lucky and find it in a quilt. Have a great VTT! So glad you gave this little quilt a home!
I'd call it interesting, because I love looking at the fabrics and how the quilt maker chose to put them all together. It was probably a utilitarian child's quilt or a lovey, as you said. Enjoyed seeing this!
I think i feel about quilts the same as aprons. I love them all, specially smaller crib quilts. I always can picture a little sweetie snuggling down and I always wonder,how did such a quilt manage to find it's way to a thrift shop. I have found 3 that way, and just couldn't leave them,so they came home with me. I think this little quilt is pretty..someone put time and love into it..

I actually like the pattern, though I think the fabrics are ugly.
It's pretty in it's own unique way. I have a similar one that i just have draped in a big basket and it looks really great.
Amazing find for that price! I think someone has done the best she could with the fabrics she had. I wouldn't call it ugly, just not as pretty as a quilt can be;-)
This is quite a unique piece.Probably not what the quilter imagined,but she made do.
I agree with you and I've recently thought I've passed up things like this and I shouldn't have - there were so many things I use towels for - and blankets that something like this would be so much nicer for!

My Mom tells me that my Grandma used to make her quilts after all the girls had handed down their clolthes. She would take their outgrown dresses and make her quilts. Very unique quilt you have and what a bargain.
Like you said, I am sure whoever made this little quilt, did the best she could with what ahe had. Any quilt is nice to me..
There is no such thing as an ugly quilt! :-) Some little child would find that array of fabrics simply fascinating. I know, because I was that little child once. :-)
What a great deal! I like the quilt the and don't think it's ugly, although the backing is quite miss matched to the front.
You know, I think you're exactly right. It does look like a "lovey" or a "special nini" as they're called in our house. I bet someone loved that little quilt a lot. Adorable! :)
Y'know, now that I'm seeing on my blog, at a distance? It's looking better. Almost sweet since it probably was special to someone - it's been washed a lot.
I just love old quilts! I like to use them as table cloths.

Oh that little quilt is pretty in its own way. It looks like it was made from mismatched clothes. The price was right as well.
