Tuesday quilt blocks Feb. 12

Busy busy busy in my day job, and trying to find time to sew.  I did over the weekend, and made a set of Crayon Box blocks, from the free pattern section of Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville blog. I am using gray centers, and older stash, including Jinny Beyer "too good to use" fabric.  Well it's been over 20 years, I can use it now!
I laid the blocks on the floor to see how they look together.  Not sewn together yet.

A bit more of a mish mash than I expected - I hope the gray blocks are a repeating design element and give the eye a place to rest.  We'll see when the blocks are sewn together and the gray border is on.  Maybe take off some of the palest white fabric pieces????

Jane triangle Oct. 30

Good day and welcome!
Life is pretty busy here at chez Viridian!  I was away at a conference and could not post last week.
This week I have a Jane Stickle triangle that I finished earlier this month.

This is on the right side of the quilt as it is usually shown, 10th down from the top.  Paper pieced, then the two sides (in white) were appliqued on.  I pricked my finger and got a little blood on this one!  Helpful hint:  use your own saliva to get the blood out - it works!
There is supposed to be another white triangle appliqued on to match the quilt - I decided to stop here.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Quilt block Oct. 16

Well life continues on in its busy way, and I slowly continue on with my Jane Stickle blocks.  This week: A change from triangles, to do a 4.5 inch (finished) block:

This is J-3 or Rick's Volleyball net.  I appliqued on the white quarter circles on the center square.  My seams don't match, but finished is better than perfect!

Tuesday triangle Oct. 9

Good day and welcome to my blog!  I found some more time to work on quilting projects this past week.  I have a project in process, not ready for pictures.  What I can share with you is another Jane Stickle triangle:

This triangle is from the top row of the quilt as it is usually shown, and is #8 from the left.  Paper piecing and a little applique on the bottom.  Not too bad!  One of my favorite fabrics for this quilt.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Oct. 2

Hello and welcome to my blog!  The day job keeps me hopping and so my production of Jane Stickle blocks and triangles has slowed down.  Here is one I finished a few weeks ago, piecing and easy applique:

This one is from the left side of the quilt, as it is usually shown.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Sept. 25

Hello and welcome to my blog today!  Busy at my day job, but slowly working on my Jane Sticle blocks and triangles.  Here is a triangle I made earlier this month:

This is from the bottom row of the quilt as it is usually shown, 3rd from the left, and is called Attic Window.  My big bottom triangle came up a little short so I had to add a strip - not matching the plaid - oops!  Indigo fabric not black.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Quilt Block Sept. 18

Good Morning!  My busy work life leaves me little time to blog.  And a bad cold left me lethargic and sniffling all weekend.  So today i share with you a Jane Stickle block I made at the end of August:

This is F-1.  I appliqued the diamonds on.  And it really is a square 5 inch block!

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Sept. 11

You know, having a busy day job really cuts into blogging, and reading others' blogs! :-)

But it's Tuesday and time to share another triangle.  This one is from the bottom row of the Jane Stickle quilt, as shown in the book about this quilt.

With some careful planning this one can be paper pieced.  Indigo blue fabric not black.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Sept. 4

Hello and welcome!  Time for my weekly share of a Tuesday Triangle.
These are 5 by 8 inches, in the style of Jane Stickle.  Indigo blue fabric, not black.

Once again leaning a bit to the left on top!!!!  Had to fudge the bottom white fabric pieces.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Aug. 28

Hello and welcome!
And so my day job begins! Busy times ahead. So just enough time to share with you a triangle in the style of Jane Stickle, finishing at 5 by 8 inches.

This is from the top row of the quilt as it is usually shown, 10th from the left.  Hmm, leaning a bit to the left on the top, hope this won't be a  problem later!

Tuesday triangle: Aug. 21

Hello and welcome to my weekly post!  At least I try to have a new entry weekly.

Today I have a Dear Jane triangle to share, one that I appliqued a while ago. When you are following the work of Jane Stickle, those 4.5 inch blocks and those triangles. you have to think long term, and be happy with the little finishes along the way.

These triangles finish at 5 by 8 inches.  There IS a sense of accomplishment after appliqueing.

This triangle appears on the right side of the Jane Stickle quilt, as it is usually shown, and is known as Love forever.  The pencil line is where I will eventually trim - I cut my background fabric a little large in case of fraying.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday Triangle Aug. 14

Hello and welcome to my weekly post!  At least I try to have a new entry weekly.
Today I have a Dear Jane triangle to share, one that I appliqued a while ago.  These triangles finish at 5 by 8 inches.

This triangle appears on the right side of the Jane Stickle quilt, as it is usually shown, and is known as Fedelia's hearts.
Appliquing that little heart on the top was tough!  The background is cut extra large - the pencil line is where I am going to trim, when I get ready to assemble the border.  When will that be?  Not for a while, I think!

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Yet another quilt top July 31

Good day!
Once upon a time I had a great number of cut 2 inch strips of 30's reproduction fabric, as shown in this post.  I set myself a challenge - how many quilt tops can I make from these strips, not adding too much in the way of background fabric?
Well, I am up to quilt top #3, another one in the pattern of Crayon Box by Bonnie Hunter:

This looks very much like the first crayon box top, only there is more green fabric in the strips, and a green border.  The first Crayon box quilt had more yellow, and a yellow border.
And you know, there were still strips of fabric left over.

So I am in the midst of piecing quilt #4, a Chinese coins style quilt, not ready to be pictures.  Oh yes, and a doll quilt, made from 2 inch squares, all leftovers:

Layered and ready for quilting.
This is what's left:

Will it never be used up?!

Quilt top July 17

Hello and welcome, on these warm days in the American Midwest!

I am back after a week away on vacation to visit family.  Before I left I attacked two boxes of 2 inch fabric strips, of 30's reproduction prints.  I had cut them earlier for a planned Trip Around the World quilt project.  The mojo for that project fizzled.  What to do with all those strips, about 18 inches long, cut mostly from fat quarters, and some yardage?

And how many quilt tops can I make from these strips?

First up:  I resized and recalculated Bonnie Hunter's pattern for Crayon Box from a 12 inch block, sewn with 2.5 inch strips, to a 9 inch block, sewn with 2 inch strips.  A little drawing with graph paper and I had it.  On to sewing, with a wide variety of those 30's prints.

White fabric centers are from leftovers from quilt backs.  8 blocks by 10 blocks leads to a 72 by 90 inch quilt top.  Still undecided on borders - maybe none.
I like the way this turned out - bright and colorful.  And those boxes of fabric strips above?  Look barely touched.  I have more sewing to do!

Tuesday quilt block June 26

I document here my quilting progress, mostly on Dear Jane blocks and triangles. Sometimes a few other projects. New carpet, drywall and paint are in the finished basement, and I am unpacking my quilting stuff from the big moving boxes. Err, a bit more than I remember! I don't think it will all fit on the shelves!

So a bit here on past progress. This is H-11.

Love this indigo fabric.   A great reproduction.

Tuesday quilt block June 19

Hello and welcome!
I am on a trip for my day job.  But I have my computer with me and I can share with you a quilt block from my ongoing Dear Jane journey.
This is L-6, called Maze of Madness:

Paper pieced, with some newer fabric.  Such tiny pieces!  Crazy!  The lines on the plaid fabric don't line up except by accident but that is OK by me, it is done!  Thanks to the Dear Jane program by Electric quilt, I was able to use the paper piecing foundations the program generated.

Tuesday Triangle June 12

Good day, on a somewhat gloomy day in the American Midwest, and welcome to my blog.  It's a busy June for me, with travel and my day job!
Still I can find time to share a triangle from an on-going project, my Dear Jane in Indigo blue and white.

This is a triangle from the top of the Dear Jane quilt as it is usually shown.  I see now it's a little wonky or tilted - hopefully it will work out when pieced into the border of my quilt.  I think that day will come - eventually!  I can piece 2 -3 blocks or triangles a week, except now with the contractors here, taking care of the water damage and repainting.
My sewing/quilting stuff is all packed up in boxes or stacked in another room.  It's going to be VERY interesting unpacking everything and putting it back in place!!!

Tuesday triangle May 29

Good day, and thanks for visiting my blog.
A busy time with graduation and parties and visitors, so just a short share.  I am plugging along wiht my blocks and triangles for my Dear Jane quilt, in indigo fabrics.

This is on the left side, as the quilt is usually shown, second down from the top.  Odd shapes but it can be entirely paper pieced.

Tuesday quilt block May 22

Good day to you, and welcome to my blog of quilty things.
I am continuing on my Jane Stickle project in indigo and white.  I check out every fabric store I can, and on-line too, for more indigo and white fabrics with that look of circa 1900 about them.  I am getting to know the reproduction fabric lines!
I manage  2-3 blocks or triangles a week now.  But soon I will have company, a graduation party, and birthday parties to plan for.   For now, I will share a block with you.

This is M-11 also known at Rickshaw, for what reason I don't know.  Carefully paper pieced, with each fabric piece cut oversized, sewn down and flipped, then trimmed.

Please see dearjane.com for more explanation of the 1863 quilt I am slowly reproducing in blue and white.

Tuesday quilt block May 8

Hello and welcome!
It's time for something quilty on this blog.  If you read my last entry you know that we had a water leak in our finished basement, where my quilt stuff resides.  No quilty stuff got  wet or was damaged, but I have not been able to get down there as the room was being dried out and the water line fixed.  It was hard, not doing sewing!
Yesterday, finally dry, I went in and cleaned off my sewing table and cut and sewed pieces for this next block.  Ahh! So much better!  Even one 4.5 inch block.

An alternate block, not one that appears in Jane Stickle's quilt, but a flying geese block that plays well with the other blocks.
Still ahead: packing up everything for removal, because we need new carpet, and some drywall work.
Prepping some hand applique now!
