VTT: Children's tea sets

I am joining Coloradolady this week for Vintage Thingy Thursday, and My Cottage Charm for Treasures and Trinkets Thursday.  See what other people are sharing - click on the icons above.
As Coloradolady suggests, when you have three of something, you have a collection...

Today: Children's and doll tea sets.  This incomplete set is from a Goodwill in Massachusetts.  It's the right size for a little girl to have a party with her dolls, or with friends.  Each piece is marked "Made in Japan".  I have seen this pattern before - just not at the right price.

The next two sets are sized for the dolls themselves - very small scale.

Again, incomplete sets, but I'm building my collection!!!  These two sets are newer, and probably just barely count as vintage.

In a previous post I wrote about a sugar and creamer set that I found, so, I now have 4 things in this collection!

Vintage Thingy Thursday: Ashtray or spoon rest?

I am joining Coloradolady this week for Vintage Thingy Thursday.

Time: an afternoon last week
Place: a Goodwill store I haven't visited in a long time
Item: a leaf-shaped plate that I did not immediately recognize as an ashtray. That is how uncommon smoking is among my friends and family.
Markings: Back: Orion China, made in Japan. "Hand Painted"
Front: Sweet pink rose with two buds, gold accented rim. I'm not sure what is hand painted unless it is the wisps of gold on the bottom.
Condition: used, still pretty!

Yes I thought this would be good as a spoon rest for the stove top, and I am using it as that, but the shape is not the best.
It's hard to believe anyone would have such a pretty ashtray, but someone did. The gold accent is worn in some places, and there is a chip or two, but that is OK.

Vintage Thingy Thursday

Life has gotten pretty strange when you spend a day thrifting - just to get an item for Vintage Thingy Thursdays! But so it was today. Not much luck in Goodwill but in St. Francis I found this Homer Laughlin bowl for 79 cents. Is that a good price? It's about 5 inches across, has some chips and some problems with the glaze, but I love the flowers.
It's sad though because although some items are there because some one did some Spring cleaning, some items are there because someone died, and the house had to be cleaned out.
happy a happy vintage day!

Grandma's things- Vintage Thingy Thursday

Vintage Thingy Thursday is hosted by Coloradolady. Please visit her site and see who is playing along this week.

(That's an Easter egg in the photo!)

Here are two little 'dust catchers' that were originally owned by my grandmother. I saw the blue one as a little girl in her house, and in the way of whiny grandchildren, I asked if I could have it. Of course was the answer. Oh I just loved that blue, and the painted flowers as a child. I thought it was the most beautiful little pitcher.

Well, time flows by, and some years ago now my grandmother passed away. She had moved into an assisted living apartment that was much smaller than the old house. There wasn't much left for my mom and her siblings to clean up and distribute. But, my mom picked up the little pitcher on the right for me, remembering the story of the blue pitcher and how much I loved it.

I don't remember seeing the white pitcher anywhere in her house. It is marked Japan on the bottom. These two sit on my kitchen windowsill.

I miss you grandma.

Vintage Thingy Thursday: A creamer

I am joining Coloradolady for her Thursday party.

In a previous post of Dec. 3 2009 I described how I caught the tea cup/tea service bug, when I found a lonely sugar bowl from a child's tea set at a local antique shop with various vendors.

Last week I went back to the same place and looked for the same vendor. Lo and behold, the matching creamer was there!

Oh, this really made my day.

The bottom says "Handmade Handpainted Bone China" and "Royal Stuart - Spencer Stevenson England." It is in excellent shape.

Both now adorn my kitchen windowsill, where I can see them every day.

Happy Vintage Thingy Thursday!

Vintage thingy Thursday - Jan. 14

Check out Colorado Lady for more vintage treasures!

I bought this platter (about 15 inches across) at an antique mall and I'll admit I immediately lunged for it because of the power of memory.

My grandmother - my mom's mom, had this set. Well, I assume she had the whole set. By the time the first grandchild (me) came along, she may have had 5 or 6 more or less complete place settings and some serving dishes. The rest had suffered and been broken in a house with 5 children. Turkey at special dinners were always served on a platter just like this, and I was able to use one of the few remaining dinner plates. Not many plates survived the ensuing 10 grandchildren.

Grandma passed away in 1990 but I remember her with love today. She moved from the big house with 3 bedrooms, to a large apartment, then a small apartment, then to a tiny apartment in senior assisted living. I don't know what became of what was left of her china and serving platter. But this one is here to remind me.

It was made by Edwin M. Knowles China Co., and made in the USA. Apparently that really is '22 karat [sic] gold' around the edge.
Grandma, I miss you.
