Q is for Quilt, of course!

If you follow this blog you knew this was coming. Quilting is my main hobby. Yes, I would give up Postcrossing and continue quilting. Not much is getting done lately, so I looked through old blog postings to show you a quilt.

This is my nosegay quilt, in the midst of being quilted, by the piece.  The prints are actual old fabric, some of it feedsack.  The solids and the white fabric are new.  I haven't touched this since some time in 2010!! it might be time to return to this project.  It is still in the hoop, just as you see it.

Vintage Thingy Thursday: Double Wedding ring summer spread

I am joining Coloradolady this week for Vintage Thingy Thursday. See what other people are sharing - click on the icon above.
Today's entry is a summer spread in the double wedding ring pattern (DWR).  It is a spread because it is a single layer of fabric, finished and with a dust ruffle. It looks pretty good on a queen sized bed.

Here's another look at the rings and the embroidery around the rings and in the middle.  The ring segments were pieced and then appliqued onto the yellow fabric.  Then, a close-up of the lovely 30's fabrics, and where a an area of the yellow fabric was carefully mended.  Can you see it, under the center embroidered flower motif?  Click on the photograph to see a larger version.  this was a careful mending job!

This view of the back shows how this applique and embrodiery was done.

This is yet another ebay purchase.  It looks much better in person that in these photos, and in the on-line listing, so I feel like I won a real treasure.

Speaking of winning, let me mention here the giveaway contest in pregress at my other blog, Viridian's Postcard blog.  In honor of post #99, I am giving away a set of 10 unused postcards.

How to enter this contest: Leave a comment on this post and please include a way to contact you if your blogger profile does not include your email address or blog name. A mention of this contest on your blog would be great but not necessary. A give-away is also a promotional scheme after all.

Enter by Tuesday June 29 at 6 PM Eastern USA time. (I have family vacation the week before this.) At that time I will close entries and use a random number generator or random list generator (See Random.org) to pick the winner. The next post will announce the winner. Once I have a shipping address the postcards are off to its new happy home.
Happy Vintage Thingy Thursday!

Spring 2010 Blogger's Quilt Festival

I am joining the Blogger's Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side. See the button on my sidebar.

Amy asks: Share one quilt, and it's story. Why you made it, why it is special to you, what you learned about quilting/yourself while making it. The quilt doesn't have to be brand new, never seen before on your blog - show what you like!

This quilt has been about 10 years in the making, now that I think back upon it. I saw this pattern in a long-ago quilt magazine and fell in love with it. I'd seen vintage quilts in this pattern and wanted to make my own. So, many 2 inch strips of fabric were cut, sewn together, and cross cut. Each finished square is 1.5 inches across, which at the time I considered tiny. Obviously I hadn't started my Baby Jane in the style of Jane Stickle project yet!

This is a full-sized quilt, so there are indeed many little squares of fabric. I included a few vintage fabrics in there, to bring me a smile, and maybe cause a future quilt appraiser to scratch their heads. I used a thin cotton bat for an old-fashioned look, but the problem is that one must quilt lines less that 2 inches apart. I spent much time machine quilting on my home Kenmore, as you can see in the close-up. However the wreaths in the plain blocks are quilted by hand. I still have to put some sort of motif in the middle, or the batting will bunch up when I wash it the first time.

Why special: It represents a lot of my time. It is cheerful and sunny, and will be the summer quilt on my bed.

What did I learn: Patience!

And guess what - it STILL isn't done! I am sewing down the binding this week. I had saved some of the purple fabric used in the plain squares for the binding, but years later, I couldn't find it. So I am using pink bias binding instead.

Vintage Thingy Thursday: DWR Quilt

DWR = Double wedding ring quilt. This one is four rings by five rings, and was purchased off ebay about a year ago.

There is some surface discoloration, but otherwise this quilt is in great shape - no weak fabric or holes. And the fabrics! Just classic depression-era prints.

Most fabrics are dress-making cottons, similar to our quilting cotton fabric today. Only a few pieces are of that coarser weave fabric that says "feedsack". it is hard to see in these photos, but there is dense quilting in an interesting pattern. Someone did a fantastic job.

Vintage Thingy Thursday: Ugly vintage quilt

But for $1.50, can you really pass it by?

I found this crib sized quilt (48 by 33.5 inches) at a thrift store where I have found other old quilts. This one is in bad shape. It's a bit ugly, with mixed 40's and 50's fabrics making up the 4 patches, with an ugly fabric in between the rows.
The backing is a cheater fabric. The filler appears to be a loosely woven cheesecloth type of fabric. It is tied, not quilted.

But somebody really tried to make a nice looking quilt, with the materials she had, and this may have been some child's "lovey".

Visit Coloradolady for more vintage thingies. They just have to be vintage, not pretty. Though she has some very pretty plates this week.

Soon: back to quilt content

Coming soon: back to our regularly scheduled quilt content!!

I have been ill for much of January and February, but now I am better, with higher energy. Blogging was one of the first things to go, and I haven't been quilting much either. Don't worry all is well. I have photos of my current projects, and some photos of some vintage quilts. Also, I passed by my second year blog-oversary in mid-February, and I'm coming up to post #150. So keep your eye out for a giveaway.

You know you've read too many quilt history books when. . .

you see a truck with a Tennessee licence plate (in Ohio), with tags indicating Rhea County, and the first thing you think of is - "Oh! the stuffed work trapunto quilts of Rhea County! How amazingly beautiful they are!"

Vintage Thingie Thurs.

A vintage quilt: How old does something have to be to be ‘vintage’? I believe for autos it is twenty years. If this applies to quilts, then this one may qualify.
Back to my favorite thrift store, but there is not much except this, made of non-traditional fabric, including polyester blends and a little double knit. [When will quilts with double knit fabrics become collectible? Now there’s a question.] Constructed in the strippy style, there is no filler and the back is pieced from different pieces of cotton flannel fabric. I know the piece in the center is from an old flannel sheet, because I can see where the top edging has been undone to add a few more inches of fabric. This was made by a thrifty person. Tied with poly yarn at regular intervals, and the edges are machine-sewn. Made in the 70’s or 80’s perhaps?

I purchased this as throw to keep in the hall closet near the living room. I have stocked that closet with Polartec –style blankets that are so soft and cuddly, but 3 in a row have ended up on my son’s bed. I guess because they are soft and cuddly. I think this will stay in the closet, to be used when I am taking a quick nap on the couch. I like it. It is plain but not ugly, clean and in good shape.

Check out other vintage things at http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/!

Note added later: This is ONE quilt - the front and the back are shown. Yes the flannel is cozy!

April triangles

Some recent triangles. Frank's rick rack, on the left, is quite graphic. Generally I try to do each tri twice: for my repro Christmas quilt and then for my pink and white quilt. My numbers are moving up slowly. I'm beginning to really like doing triangles. There is a real sense of satisfaction when one is done.
