Good day, and welcome to my blog.
I was looking at a pattern book by Kim Diehl that I got out of the library. I tried a sample block of her Pie Birds block from her Simple Charm book.
It was not simple.
Not for the beginner quilter. No inset or Y seams, but many flipped corners, and 65 pieces by my count in the block. But what a great look! Even though it took a long time to sew. And I have done Dear Jane blocks, and Nearly Insane blocks, why am I complaining about 65 pieces of fabric in a 10 inch block?
I have already cut fabric for more blocks. But I may make only 9 blocks - we'll see. Think of the work involved in making log cabin blocks with tiny logs seen in some antique quilts.

i made the runner with that block....tricky but came out right....
Oh that block does look challenging but it looks great. Well done!
Very pretty block but oh so many pieces! It will be worth it though when you get more blocks done. I bet they look so lovely all together. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

The block looks great- well worth the effort! 65 pieces in one block is pretty impressive!
Second post in a row that I am commenting about something KD! It is a great block and is one of those that you can't look at thinking you'll sew them up quickly. This is a good one for leader/ender sewing: stitching up the parts in between pushing through pieces of other primary projects. For me, focusing on this as a primary project would make working on it feel like a slog and I wouldn't want to work on it. Designate it as an "all in good time" project and it will probably get made up faster than you expect!
That's a nice block. Love it.
Fascinating block. I confess, I would have simplified the process or made it more complex depending on personal preferences. It would have required more pieces, but I would have achieved the black triangles with two HST. No flipping required and easier to chain piece.
What a beautiful block! I love your color choices and can't wait to see the next 8 blocks or more ;) Have fun piecing these kind of flying geese! Thank you for sharing and linking up.
I made the runner and it is the one thing I keep out year round! I just wish I had a larger stash of Kim Diehl fabrics when I made it. Is it crazy that I am thinking of making another with all her fabric? LOL
That is a great looking block! I look forward to seeing more. . .you are one patient person to fiddle with 65 pieces of fabric for one block!!!!
That is a very interesting block, but oh my 65 pieces!
Great block, but that is a LOT of little pieces for a 10" block! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great week.
I love that block and the fabrics you are using but I don't think I want to try it with all those pieces. I love the name of the block too. I actually have a couple of pie birds I use when baking pies.
it does not look simple at all - but I really like the look!!
